Ardmore Welcome Center Tourism Celebration Set For May 18th

By Cayce Lee
Social Media Specialist, Athens-Limestone County Tourism Association

The towering Saturn 1B rocket looms over Interstate 65 in Limestone County near Ardmore at Mile Marker 363 South.  This surprising sight in the midst of farmer's fields welcomes visitors to the State of Alabama with friendly smiles and plenty of information.

The State of Alabama Welcome Center has sat in the shadow of the Saturn 1B rocket for 39 years and assist more than one-million visitors a year.  The staff answers questions of all varieties - lodging, dining, events.  In 2013, the Ardmore Welcome Center was warded Welcome Center of the Year for all their hard work.

Each year the Ardmore Welcome Center host a day of celebration in conjunction with National Tourism Month.  The 2016 day is slated for May 18th from 10:00AM-3:00PM.  This year the Ardmore Welcome Center hopes to share with visitors how tourism's impacts local, regional and
statewide  communities' economies, cultures, and social issues.

This event also kicks off the beginning of the family vacation season.  Interstate 65 is a heavily traveled byway connecting the Gulf of Mexico shores to the Great Lakes.  From its northern terminus in Gary, Indiana to its southern terminus in Mobile, Alabama, the interstate stretches 887.3 miles.  The Alabama portion of Interstate 65 is the longest of all the states at over 367 miles and the Saturn 1B rocket and the friendly staff at the Ardmore Welcome Center are a terrific start to that journey.

Local businesses and organizations will be in attendance to greet and share information with visitors.  There will be tasty treats from producers and companies from all over the state, live music and lots of photo opportunities with Southern Belle's and Gentlemen - maybe even an Astronaut.

The public is invited to come enjoy the fun and learn how tourism and travel dollars boost the economy, build jobs and benefits Alabama's communities.
