The rows upon rows of evergreen trees visible from U.S. Highway 72 and the 306 BBQ and Catering lot is only the tip of the iceberg of Trim-A-Tree Farm.  The family-owned farm is the perfect place to make memories for the whole family.

At Trim-A-Tree Farms you can select a pre-cut Fraser Fir or you can come and pick a Leyland Cypress or Carolina Sapphire to take home fresh from the field.  Trim-A-Tree also gives you the option to cut your own tree.  However, if you'd like them to do all the work, they'll cut, net and load your tree for you.  That includes being shaken -- and interesting process where they rattle the tree to shake out what may have landed, nested or made a home of your new Christmas tree.

When the weather cooperates, your children can enjoy pony rides with the family pony on the weekends.  You'll even find a gift shop on site full of goodies crafted with care for your decorating and gift giving needs.

Bring your camera and record your family's experience taking home one of these evergreen jewels or the kids enjoy the pony.  You might even get enjoy sitting around the fire pit, weather and drought permitting.  You'll definitely go home enjoying your new memories and friends you'll make.

To visit Trim-A-Tree Farm, you'll find them on Line Road just off U.S. Highway 72 next to 306 BBQ and Catering and south of Pepper Road. They're open 9:00AM-5:00PM Monday-Saturday and 12:00PM-5:00PM Sundays. For more information, call (256) 497-0801

The dust will fly and the engines will roar during the Alabama Championship Tractor and Truck Pull will rev up the fun June 29th and 30th at Tanner High School 12060 Sommers Road in Athens, Alabama at 7:00PM both nights.  This annual event held by the Tanner Quarterback club benefiting Tanner Athletics Program brings an estimated 6,000 people each night to Tanner, AL and the Limestone County community.

This highly heralded Mid-South pulling event is one of Limestone County's largest agritourism event.  It's origins can be traced back to the 1970's when Shirley Haney and Johnny Malone returned from a pull in Columbia, TN.  They put together this Tanner cornerstone event following the devastation of the 1974 Tornado Super Outbreak that tore through the community with intentions of boosting the athletics program of Tanner School.

Celebrating 40 years this year, the event has raised more than $1.5 million dollars. The Tanner Quarterback Club and Tanner School athletics programs have worked together to expand sports fields and associated services for their student athletes. Their hardwork and dedication has allowed for the purchase of seven acres to construct two youth sports fields. Additionally, 20 acres have been purchased in the school's vicinity with discussions of expansion for future sports fields. The Tanner Quarterback Club has also use the funds to light the baseball and football fields and construct a baseball diamond.

Tickets for the Alabama Championship Tractor and Truck Pull will be sold at the gate each night and are $15.00 for adults; $10.00 for children 7 & up; and children 6 & under are free.  Food and beverage concessions will be available during the pull.  Ear plugs are suggested, as these professional trucks and tractors can be extremely loud.

Rainwater Harvesting and Build -Your Own Rain barrel Workshop

Rainwater Harvesting and Build Your Own Rain Barrel Workshop

We are blessed to live in the state of Alabama for the abundance of natural resources. Alabama is one of the most diverse states in the country in regards to biological diversity. Whether it is plants or animals, Alabama ranks fifth in terms of overall species diversity. We are also blessed with immense water resources, including tens of thousands of miles of rivers and streams. In addition to the lakes and streams, Alabama is also blessed with a great deal of rainfall. Alabama receives between 50”–60” of rain annually. This is a lot of rain Unfortunately we don’t always get the rain when we need it. For the last two years it seems like farmers and home gardens have struggled with getting the garden planted on time due to rain.  On the other hand, many gardens and farms have suffered during drought conditions we have experienced in the past. For homeowners there is a solution to drought conditions: Rainwater Harvesting! The idea behind rainwater harvesting is to collect the water when we are getting rain to use when we are not getting the rain.

Why collect rainwater?

The answer is not an economic response. As important of a resource as water is, it is cheap. You won’t notice much of a cost savings by collecting rainwater. There are a few very good reasons to collect rainwater.

1. Rainwater is free of salts and other minerals that can damage plant roots.

2. It is about being environmentally conscious; collecting rainwater helps to alleviate the strain on the municipal water supply.

3. During drought conditions when rain is scarce, municipalities can restrict water usage. If you’ve collected rainwater guess what? Your garden and landscape can continue to grow without suffering because of the drought. So how do you collect rainwater? All you need to collect rainwater is a container. It can be as high tech as you want it. You can install a cistern with a pump, or you can stick a bucket under the gutter. You need a container and a way to get the water out. Most people who harvest rainwater use rain barrels. A rain barrel is usually a 55-gallon drum with a water spigot in the bottom. You can purchase commercial rain barrels from many different stores. You can also build your own rain barrel very easily. Again, the container does not matter, but if the opening doesn’t allow you to get the water out of it with ease, you will want to install a spigot.

The Limestone County Extension office is offering a build your own rain barrel workshop August 21, 2014 at 10:00 a.m.at the Athens office located at 1109 West Market Street in Athens. There is a $40.00/barrel fee for the workshop.

If you are interested, please call the Limestone County Extension office at 256-232-5510 to pre-register. Please specify how many barrels you would like.  Registration is needed before August 20 and you may pay for your barrel at the workshop.
